What am I supposed to eat?

I get this question a lot. It is an important one. Based on my research and personal experience, nutrition (not exercise) is responsible for most changes in body composition as well as numerous other health benefits. I read once that you can't out-train a bad diet (at least after age 22 or so). I believe this to be the case.

Here are the basics:

Eat meat, fish, eggs, vegetables, fruit, nuts and seeds.

Avoid grains, bread, rice, pasta, potatoes (except for the occasional sweet potato or yam), processed food-like substances, sugar, artificial sweeteners, fruit juice, workout drinks, ingredients you cannot pronounce, soft drinks, etc.

By following this template most of the time, you will do wonders for your overall health and physical performance.

Forget counting calories. It makes life miserable and typically doesn't work.

Don't do the diet-of-the month you saw in Men's Health or Shape magazines.

Eat when you are hungry. Randomly skip meals if you want to or are just busy. Eat the right foods until you are satisfied. Eat slowly and enjoy your food.

As author Michael Pollan said, eat natural foods your great grandmother would recognize.

Learn to cook with color, texture and spices.

Don't stress about it or micromanage. An occasional piece of chocolate, beer, or piece of bread isn't the end of the world. Just make these foods rare occurrences. Also, it is better to be fairly strict at the beginning to allow for adaption.

I will post nutrition information on the main page. If you want to research the diet that I prescribe, I offer the following links to get you started:
